BLOGGERS NOTE:
I want to make something really clear right off the bat here. When I talk about “conservatives” here, I’m not talking about the conservative movement that was born about the same time as the Republican party during the civil war that dreamed of small, unobtrusive government and reduced taxes on the middle class, okay? I’m talking about modern conservatives, the so-called “neo-conservative” movement that was born with that scion of purity Newt Gingrich (who divorced his first wife on her death bed and was cheating on another wife while he was persecuting Bill Clinton for cheating) in the mid-1990’s. I’m talking about a movement that wants to boil all of the glory of Christianity and conservatism down to “God Hates Fags”. FYI
Okay, I said that so that I could say this…
Anyone out there who wants their children to remain virgins until their wedding day or until they move in with someone if you’re not hung up on the whole marriage thing, raise your hands. Yes, yes, very good. I think that a lot of us want the best for our kids. Now… any of you who were NOT virgins on your wedding days… and I’m talking about voluntary intercourse, not molestation here… lower your hands. Go ahead, it’s okay. No one else can see you.
If more than ¾ of the hands didn’t just go down, I’ll eat my fedora without pepper. We CANNOT expect our children to behave better than we did. We can hope, but we can’t expect it.
Now let me ask this… do you honestly believe that there is any way to keep teenagers out of each other’s pants other than separating the two sexes around age 8 for ten years? All THAT would probably do is produce the first almost exclusively homosexual generation. And yet, the modern conservatives will only give money to schools that teach abstinence-only sex ed. Talk about kidding ourselves.
What’s the result of conservative sexual attitudes being taught to kids? Well, let’s look at the years that we’ve had conservative leadership vs. liberal leadership…
Up until 1985, teen birth rates (this is age 15 to 19) hovered between five and six percent. From 1980 until 1992, we had conservative presidents. So what happened from the mid-eighties to the early nineties? Teen birth rates rose about a percentage point. More kids got pregnant under Presidents Reagan and Bush than in recorded history (so to speak – I’m sure that neither of those men were personally responsible.) Then comes Clinton, right? Liberal, no responsibility, blow-job getting President Bill Clinton (spit where appropriate). So under Clinton, teen birth rates EXPLODED, right? Ten, fifteen percent? Actually, during the Clinton era, teen birth rates fell steadily, LOSING two to three percentage points. In 2000, they had dropped to four to five percent. And pregnancies among 15 to 17 year olds dropped from four percent to about TWO. A 34% overall drop from their high points. They’ve remained just about stable until 2005. Since 2005, they have risen from about four percent to almost five again. In other words, folks, CONSERVATIVE SEX EDUCATION AIN’T WORKING. As of now, America has more teen pregnancies than any other industrialized country in the world. WE’RE NUMBER ONE! (Sometimes it ain’t so hot to be number one, folks.)
And, with Sarah Palin, the arch-conservative Governor of Alaska, we have a vice-presidential candidate with a pregnant, unmarried 17 year old daughter.
Another problem with the conservatives setting our sexual standards is that they deny funding to any women’s clinic in any foreign country that we fund that offers abortion. That’s right folks – abortion is legal here, but we won’t allow it “there”. So if a woman in one of these countries is raped, or becomes pregnant through incest, or becomes pregnant by an HIV-infected man (a BIG problem in Africa, where these funds are relied heavily upon), that’s just TFB. She’s gotta have the kid. Or get her very own nifty back-alley abortion.
Speaking of abortion, what happened here in America during the different eras where abortion is concerned? Well, after rising dramatically from zero in the years from the passage of Roe Vs. Wade until 1980, they stayed about steady until 1990. Then that damned Bill Clinton took office, and abortion rates dropped by nearly ten percent in the decade of the nineties. The good news is that they have continued to drop under Bush. Personally, I think that this is less because of conservative sex education (remember the rising teen pregnancy rate) and more because of conservative funding. Many women’s clinics here in the US have seen their funding cut or eliminated if they continued to offer abortions.
Look, I’m not an abortion advocate, okay? I think that abortion sucks. It makes my heart sad. I would sincerely love to wake up tomorrow in a country that had zero abortions… but, unlike the conservatives, I think that the way to ensure that is NOT by illegalizing abortion, but through education about and availability of birth control. I agree with that vile Bill Clinton who said that abortion in America should be “legal, safe and RARE.”
On a different topic, who out there enjoys pornography? Me too. I heard a co-worker comment one time that she was “dating Porn” (meaning a Thai co-worker named Porn), and I had to laugh. Yeah, there have been times when I’m “dating porn” myself. Well, when Mr. Bush appointed that scion of virtue Alberto Gonzales to the office of Attorney General, his marching orders were to curtail pornography. Not just kiddie-porn, mind you, which NEEDS to be curtailed to the point of elimination, but ALL Porn. Fortunately, every Constitution-busting law that the conservatives passed during that time was challenged in the Supreme Court and struck down. Too bad we couldn’t protect the rest of our rights as well.
PS – if you are unfortunate enough to trip across real, honest-to-God child porn on the internet, you can report it at www.missingkids.org, the Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Please don’t waste their time with drawings, computer renderings or stories, or pictures of people who are “maybe too young”, okay? They work with the FBI, so what they’re going to be looking for are exploited KIDS. Not exploited drawings or exploited young looking nineteen year olds.
Pornography is nothing new, folks. And in America, it really only became an issue when it became easily available to us plebes. When only the aristocracy could have it (up through about 1950) it was no problem. Yes, it’s been around that long. It wasn’t just invented to encourage people to go on the internet. As long as there have been movies, there have been porno movies. For those who don’t believe me, you can find porn films on video and on the internet from the 1920’s. As long as photography has existed, people have been photographing other people “doing it”. Before that it was painting, sculpture, stories… even pre-Christian Grecian urns. In the 1700’s a man named Donatien Alphonse Francois Sade (better known as the Marquis de Sade) brought porno to the French masses and was promptly persecuted by the nobility, who wanted to keep all of the porn for themselves.
Another thing that the Bush crowd tried to do was illegalize birth control again. Never made it past the planning stages, from what I gather.
So that’s it for sex. Liberal sex policies seem to work as well as or better than conservative sex policies.
Peace.
