We have a thing in America called “PC” or “Political Correctness”. This means that you have to be careful of what you say and what you do. This has resulted in things like little league teams getting cakes at the end of a season where they haven’t won one game that say things like “You’re the best team!” so that their feelings get hurt and they never actually have to… you know… improve.
Personally, I think that PC is BS. I think that we have PC in this country so that we don’t actually have to be courteous to one another. It also results in things like ignorant white people saying “How come black people can call each other THE N WORD and we can’t?” My response to that is always “You shouldn’t say it, they shouldn’t say, NO ONE SHOULD SAY IT! IT’S AN UGLY, POINTLESS, HURTFUL WORD!” I vastly preferred the 70’s when young black guys started a terrific, multi-racial tradition of calling each other “brother”.
Here’s why I bring this up…
I saw an item on the news today that I absolutely could not believe.
The girl’s basketball team of a private Christian school destroyed their opponents 100 to 0. Yes, you read that right… ONE HUNDRED TO ZERO! Killed them. Tromped them. But now… get this… wait for it… THE PRINCIPAL OF THE SCHOOL THAT WON FIRED THE COACH BECAUSE HE REFUSED TO APOLOGIZE TO THE LOSING TEAM!
Wait a minute… What? Since when do Americans apologize for winning? That’s ludicrous. Would the principal have preferred that he have his girls play at less than their best? That’s not what we want to teach our kids, is it? “Just do enough to get by, don’t bother excelling. That’s fine.” Balderdash. Or would he have preferred that his girls just call the game when they were ahead by say… fifty or sixty points. Yeah, that would have really boosted the morale of the other team. “Not only are we killing you, but we don’t even think that you’re going to catch up or beat us, so we’re walking off the court.” I say again… balderdash.
To add idiotic insult to insane injury, the principal commented that such a victory was “unchristian”. REEEEAAALLLY. He must be reading a different Bible than I am, because I can’t find anywhere in the book where it says “Be ashamed of your God-gifts.” As a matter of fact, when I was a kid, one of the songs that we learned said “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. LET IT SHINE, LET IT SHINE, LET IT SHINE!” Now I realize that the light that this refers to is the light of your belief in God, but I think that it applies here, since God obviously chose to allow these girls to shine at basketball.
Now, if the girls had won through cheating or dirty pool, or had gloated after the game, then I can understand asking for an apology. Those things are truly unchristian. But to apologize for winning? NO WAY!
*** NOTE *** - it turns out that the e-mail address that i originally posted was for a DIFFERENT Covenant Christian school in Texas. Turns out that there are several. I am not sure if i can locate the correct one.
Peace.

I read your blog, as I do all of them. I am wondering if it changes your viewpoint to know that the school that was beat was a school for learning disabled students. I don't think the issue is that the coach should apologize for winning, but rather for how he won. He showed no class or sportsmanship. Even in pro football or basketball, if it is an obvious blowout, coaches with class and good sportsmanship usually pull the first stringers and put in the second or even third stringers. Maybe this school should not be playing in the same leaguem, but since they are, opposing coaches should, I think, show some class and sportsmanship at the least. He shouldn't have been fired. He shouldn't be MADE to apologize, but he should WANT to if he has a good bone in his body.
